With over 200 miles of coastal area, there is the perfect beach for everyone. The western coast is more developed and geared for tourism. For those of you who are a little more adventurous and don't mind simpler accommodations, the eastern beaches have beautiful areas with, deep-sea fishing, mangroves, kayaking, and surfing.
La Libertad, only a half hour away from San Salvador offers the easiest access. There are dozens of hotels and restaurants, but Playa Sunzal just north of La Libertad has some incredibly beautiful places. The atmosphere is much more tranquil and secure.
While the beach area at La Libertad continues to prosper, it is unfortunately known for pick-pockets and petty crime. Always be watchful of your belongings while in this area. Head north to Playa Sunzal or south to Costa del Sol.
Always check with the locals before entering the water. There can be dangerous undertows depending on where you are. For the most part, the waters are warm with wide sandy bottoms. Enjoy!

La Libertad
Just before arriving at La Libertad on highway CA-4, look for the "Canopying" sign on the left-hand side.
For $12 you can sail through the jungle while harnessed to steel cables that are secured to treetops. The facility is very well maintained. The government inspects the equipment every week. Takes about 45 minutes.

Surfing-
El Salvador has legendary surfing (best time-November through February). There are several tours and hotel packages available.

Diving-
El Salvador offers certified diving trips to volcanic reefs, shipwrecks, ocean night dives, and volcanic crater lakes. PADI certification courses are also available. Check the link below for more information:
