Return Travel Tip  San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Washington/Dulles, and Chicago are the port-of-entry cities for air carriers serving El Salvador. If you are connecting through one of these cities to your final destination, remember to allow at least 2 hours to clear customs. Miami and Los Angeles are especially busy as they receive most of the international flights from South America, Latin America, and the Carribean.

Duty Free If you are connecting to another city after clearing customs, remember that the TSA will not allow you to pass through security with liquids such as alcohol. One possibility is to place your duty free liquor in your suitcase after customs but before you recheck your bags.

TACA airlines has been operating out of the Latin American corridor since 1938. Today, TACA is equipped with a modern fleet of Airbus A-320's with an on-time performance rate of 92%. Non-stop service to and from El Salvador is available to eight US cities and Toronto. TACA often runs specials to El Salvador ahead of the other carriers, but Christmas and Easter are some of their busiest periods when Salvadorans fly home to visit family.
Comalapa International Airport is considered the largest airport in Central America. The airport boasts one of the most sophisticated radar systems in the world, qualifying SAL to be on the top ten, "America's Safest Airport" list. The passenger terminal offers duty-free shopping, several restaurants/bars, information centers, and all of the major car rental kiosks.

When arriving at the airport be prepared to pay a $10 landing fee. After exiting immigration and baggage claim, you will proceed through customs. Customs officials are friendly and efficient.

From here, you exit outside where there are typically crowds of people waiting to greet arriving flights. The car rental agencies, and taxi stands are also located here along with a few food vendors. A taxi to the capital should cost approximately $25.

Driving in El Salvador: Driving in El Salvador especially in the capital can be a little intimidating. Not for the faint of heart. Be alert, defensive, and mindful at all times of the traffic around you. Roundabouts are common and they take a little getting used to, but otherwise keep the traffic moving. On highways, watch for passing trucks, and animals. Street signs are not well marked and a good road map is a must. Better yet, hire a driver!!

Renting a car in El Salvador: Must have a valid driver's license that is at least one year old from date of issue. Valid credit card: American Express, Master Card, or Visa. A surcharge is accessed for drivers between the ages of 21-25.
