Twenty minutes north will bring you to Juayua, a busy and colorful town. Juayua has become known for its Feria Gastronomica (food festival) every Saturday and Sunday, as well as charming inns, an impressive white-washed colonial church, and mountain hikes and rappelling. Beyond Juayua are the towns of Apaneca and Ataco. These towns are typical of mountain villages with colorful homes and cobblestone streets.
Ruta de las Flores/Trail of Flowers
Ahuachapan is the end of the line for Ruta de las Flores, but is very near to El Impossible National Park located near the town of Tacuba. If you have gone this far, then heading out to El Impossible is a must. Parque Nacional El Imposible is one of the few remaining ecosystems that is refuge to many endangered species. It also offers up endless hikes through cloud forests, gorges, coffee farms, and waterfalls.
Ruta de las Flores is a beautiful scenic route
through the northwestern mountain region of
the country. It is 36 kilometers long with excellent
roads and several vista points.
Begin at Sonsonate and make your way north on
highway CA 8. Navigating the streets of Sonsonate
can be a little challenging and the signs are not well
marked. Either hire a driver or ask at the local police
station. Your first stop is Nahuizalco. A small but interesting town where they are known for furniture and basketry.
