Ruta de la Paz/The Peace Route
The Ruta de la Paz or "Peace Route" is located in the department of Morazon in the northeastern part of the country. The route begins from San Miguel and winds its way north to the town of Perquin. The department of Morazon is best known as the stronghold of the guerillas during the 1979-92 civil war. In addition to Morazon's political history, the department offers other sights such as The Sapo River Natural Protected Area, caves with petroglyphs over 10,000 years old, cascading waterfalls, and numerous hiking trails. Guatajiagua, a small village along the route that is famous for its traditional black pottery.

San Miguel is a 2 hour drive from San Salvador and the Ruta de la Paz takes all day depending on how many stops you make. It is a good idea to plan on an overnight stay in Perquin.

Take the Pan American Highway (CA1) towards San Miguel. Pass through San Miguel and take highway CA-7 (northeast) to kilometer marker 18. Look for the Shell gas station and a sign for San Francisco Gotera. Turn left and head directly north. Your first stop will be Guatajiagua followed by Cacaopera, Corinto, El Mozote, and Perquin.
While the  PA Highway and the main road to Perquin are smooth, many of the side roads are unpaved. For this trip, it is advisable to have a 4-wheel drive.
