Ilobasco has almost 100 families that produce ceramics of every shape and size imaginable. There are so many stores, that you can easily spend an entire afternoon shopping. From towering vases, to the famous Sorpresas, there is something for everyone. The shops are open from 8-5 and slightly longer on the weekends. There is also a CEDART center here with an exhibit and gift store. If you like a particular artist, the people at CEDART can point you in the right direction.
Sorpresas were made famous by artist Dominga Herrera. Sorpreses are miniatures of everyday life. Usually a round object such as a fruit or animal hides a mini scene when the lid is lifted. They are amazing and make great gifts to bring back home because they are so tiny. If you cannot make the trip to Ilobasco, there is a wonderful exhibit with more than 3,000 of Mr. Herrera's work at: San Jose Avenue #125 & Street Central America. Admission is $1.50. Hours: 10-7 Tuesday-Sunday.
An innovative Ilobaso artist added another dimension to "Sorpresas" by showing couples in blissful passion. These controversial sorpresas are kept behind the counter. Sorpresas are also availbe at handicraft shops in all of the major shopping malls in San Salvador.
