Cojutepeque marks the beginning of Ruta Artesanal. The town is working hard to develop tourism and has recently added a weekend food festival.
The major site of interest is Cerro de las Pavas (hill of the turkey) which offers great views of Lake Ilopango, Cerro Guazapa, and the volcano San Vincente. It is an easy hike up the hill under shady trees.
At the top of Cerro de las Pavas there is an outdoor shrine in honor of the Virgin de Fatima. She draws a large crowd especially on her name day, May 13th. She is surrounded by plaques from grateful visitors whose prayers have been answered. There is a small zoo with spider monkeys, raccoons, and of course, turkeys.
